Solitude Magazine: University Project.

Solitude magazine looks at the themes of isolation in crowded spaces, specifically the feeling of loneliness in London. Throughout the magazine, ideas of what loneliness is, how important the discussion of it in London is, first-hand

experiences and how we can tackle this, are explored through the medium of illustrations, question and answer and established talks. The idea stemmed from the fact that people can sometimes feel lonelier when they are surrounded by others, for example not having close relationships in the workplace, living in a block of flats with no connection to others in the building and on public transport where it is typically frowned upon to be sociable. Being alone in a crowd, especially one the size of a city, is a very overwhelming feeling. This magazine aims to shine a light on those in the dark and bring awareness to a subject that is at times left behind closed doors.

We used warmer hues of colour such as yellow, oranges, creams and reds to highlight a mood of richness and happiness in persons and objects. This would contrast greatly with the cooler hues of greys, blues and whites which would signify the feeling of seclusion and sadness.

solitude

noun

the situation of being alone without other people:

- a life of solitude - After months of solitude at sea it felt strange to be in company. - It provides one with a chance to reflect on spiritual matters in solitude.

The objective of 'Solitude' magazine, is for the reader to understand that many people experience these same feelings and thoughts and there should not be such a negative stigma around the subject. We hope that others who learn from this magazine can understand and look out for people who may be feeling lonely too.

I worked on this project for several months, researching different locations and cultures in London. The main inspiration for creating a magazine that explored these themes was simply exploring London and noticing the abundance of people but how distanced and secluded everyone is from one another. Since lockdown was introduced to the UK in March 2020, this theme could not have become more relevant to discuss.

We were extremely lucky to be featured in Design Week, in the 'Design Week’s favourite projects from graduate season so far' article 2020. We are very honoured to have been featured within their article as their primary focus is to highlight design trends and up and coming illustrators/designers.
